What texture do the Black Sands have? Why are they black?

Here's a video of Amanda playing with it. https://youtu.be/P8udh3p7WkE It feels like thicker sand with little rocks in it. We were told that it's black from the erosion of volcanic rocks. The crazy rock formations along the beach are from lava rapidly cooling as it touched the ocean.
